Meet our new CEO

Manitoba Hydro President & Chief Executive Officer, Allan Danroth

As of August 6, 2024, Manitoba Hydro has a new CEO.

Following a months-long local and national executive search, Allan Danroth was named President & Chief Executive Officer of Manitoba Hydro by the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board. Danroth replaces interim President & CEO Hal Turner, who led the utility since February following the departure of Jay Grewal.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining Manitoba Hydro at such an exciting time for the utility,” said Danroth, “and I’m looking forward to taking on this role and getting out to meet as many Manitoba Hydro employees, customers, and other interested parties as I possibly can. I believe you build trust by being present and engaged, and by working with and listening to employees and the broader community.”

Danroth holds an M.B.A. from Athabasca University, a First-Class Power Engineering designation and a diploma in Marketing and Management Sciences from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. His previous role was Vice-President of Operations at Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries.

Ben Graham, Chair of the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board, said Danroth was selected for a variety of reasons.

“He has proven success in building and guiding leaders, building trust with employees, and significant executive and ‘boots on the ground’ experience in the utility and resource sectors,” said Graham.

“He also understands that to lead effectively, you need to be present, listen, and build real relationships. His experience working in the resource and utility sectors from entry level right up to senior leadership also means he understands the challenges often faced in the field.”

Graham also emphasized appreciation for Turner’s work in the past months while the executive search was underway.

“It’s never easy being thrust into an interim position,” Graham said. “Hal will remain a critical part of the senior leadership team at Manitoba Hydro, and behalf of the Manitoba Hydro-Electric Board, I want to thank him for his efforts and leadership throughout this period.”

Danroth echoed those comments.

“I’ll be leaning on Hal a lot during my initial weeks and months on the job,” said Danroth. “I know he has done a great job keeping things on track over the last few months, and I thank him in advance for his support.”

Danroth’s first week was spent meeting with employees throughout the corporation. He will also be making efforts to meet with many of Manitoba Hydro’s wholesale customers in the coming weeks.
